my dd only would and still only will take a soothie brand passy; she gets it when she wants it, but at six mos, she usually only takes it when it is time to sleep or she is really tired.....also after a bottle (bc she will overeat massively to satisfy her desire to suck, which is very strong after eating); she gets in however much she needs to satisfy that and then she is done with it until time to sleep....i would much rather she use that than her thumb or fingers , as i can't take them away.....as far as taking it away, she is using it less and less, so i don't think we will have to, i think she will do it for us.....
i think the problem with passies for some ppl is when they shove it in eery time baby fusses or cries, and instead of the baby getting the comfort they are craving (attention, wanting to be held, etc.) they learn to associate the passy with a lot of different kinds of being satisfied...
that said, they have now said that babies that sleep with a passy have a lowered risk of sidss.....
i am pro passy if used appropriately, like anything else i think it can be used appropriately or abused....hope that makes sense....

My son's used one since about 4 weeks. He quickly took to the MAM brand, and hasn't ever liked any others. When he was really young we'd let him have it often, and it gradually became less and less. By about 8 months it was designated for nap/bed time only... and he still uses it while sleeping now at 15 months. I didn't want to have a toddler running around with one in his mouth all the time, but if used sparingly I don't feel it's a bad thing. My goal is to have them completely out of his mouth by 2.
Your son is about 5 weeks, right? That young, it really can't do any harm... they need to suck a lot, some babies more than others, so I'd let him have it. Not sure if you can really bypass the thumb sucking if he wants it.... my son did a few times around that age, but then it never became a habit. Good luck!

I tried to get my kids to take Soothies, but they weren't interested. I only really offered them while we were in the car and I couldn't nurse them.

How would you prevent a baby from sucking on his hands? My first and third liked to suck on my fingers, and my third also likes his own hands.

He'll give it up when he's ready. Promise, he won't carry it to kindergarten with it.

I use the gerber essentials. and the soothies she loves these but only takes them when she is tired, doesn't feel good, or getting her shots (upset). she is actually kinda weening herself and she's 7 months so maybe by a year if it isn't gone then it's going

I tried several kinds, but my daughter wanted nothing to do with it. She sucks her thumb quite happily. I see nothing wrong with it.

when my daughter was first born the hospital had her using a soothie. She refused to take any other kind until she was a couple months old then we got her using the NUK ones, she sucked on the same paci for about 5 months and it got a hole in it so we had to buy another NUK and it took awhile before she would take it. she had the first NUK soo stretched out from sucking that it was the size of the 6+ month ones!

she can go without, but when she sees one she sticks it in her mouth. i dont think it will be too hard to break when we decide to.

We arent going to be one of those people with the paci attached to a necklace around the kids neck lol.

pacifier and thumb sucking habit should stop by age 2 to avoid an open bite.
